At the Family Birth Center, our experts provide specialized care for patients carrying multiples (multi-fetal or multiple gestation pregnancies).

Our team has expertise in the care of medically complicated multi-fetal pregnancies, including:

  • Dichorionic diamniotic (DCDA) twins (two placentas)
  • Monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twins (one shared placenta)
  • Monochorionic monoamniotic (MCMA) twins (one shared amniotic sac)
  • Higher multiple gestations (triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, etc.)
  • Multiples with one or more fetal abnormalities

Prenatal Ultrasounds

One of our early steps in multi-fetal pregnancy care is to determine by ultrasound exam whether or not multiples share a placenta. A shared placenta could mean higher risk for complications, such as twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) or other conditions that may require specific care.

Patients carrying multi-fetal pregnancies also undergo specialized and more frequent ultrasounds to closely monitor the growth and health of each baby.

Multiple Births

At the Family Birth Center, our state-of-the-art operating room is fully equipped to accommodate optimized cesarean birth experiences for patients delivering multiples.
