How does Fraxel® work?

During the procedure, the laser treats underlying skin tissue without penetrating the skin surface. This means minimal downtime and less risk for the patient, compared to other options that remove the skin’s outer layers.

Fraxel® uses narrow laser beams to heat the deeper layers of the skin, which in turn stimulates collagen remodeling and growth of new healthy skin cells from the inside out. Because the microscopic laser beams treat fractions of the skin, while leaving surrounding tissue untouched, the treatment promotes rapid healing and a quick return to work and daily activities.

What can I expect?

About an hour before the Fraxel treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area to reduce any discomfort during the treatment. The laser treatment takes 20 to 30 minutes for a full face. Afterwards, patients may feel like they have a sunburn on the treated area. The sensation usually goes away in one to three hours. Going forward, patients should follow the aftercare instructions provided to them. They should be especially careful to avoid direct sun exposure for at least three months, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or more once the skin has healed, and wear a wide-brimmed hat when in the sun.

How many Fraxel® sessions will I need to see results?

On average, a patient may require three to five sessions spaced two to four weeks apart. This regimen facilitates healing and replacement of damaged tissue with new collagen. Optimal improvement is usually seen in two to three months. Results will likely include smoother skin, improved tone and texture, reduced brown spots, fewer lines and wrinkles around the eyes, and diminished acne scars.
